There is undeniable appeal in having a reliable rotation of essentials that easily compliment your life and style no matter the occasion. A capsule jewelry collection is just that: a curated mix of essential and significant jewelry pieces that can go with you from work to weekend to vacation, and everywhere in between.
And while we love being decked out in gold jewelry just as much as the next woman, we also want to dress (and buy jewelry) with intention. So, we asked our founder, NYC jewelry designer Gwen Beloti, to share with us her top tips for building a capsule jewelry collection.
Style is personal, so is your capsule jewelry collection
There is no one size fits all approach when it comes to creating your capsule jewelry collection. Your personal style should be the main focal point when considering what pieces to include in your capsule. For instance, if you love layering necklaces and earrings, but rarely wear rings and bracelets, then your capsule should prioritize what you wear most.
Gwen recommends asking yourself these three questions when defining what pieces to add to your capsule jewelry collection:
What’s the common thread in your jewelry wardrobe?
What creates your most flattering silhouette?
Where and how often do you wear jewelry?
The purpose of reflecting on these questions is for you to understand your own style, and create a capsule that speaks to who you are. Classic pieces like stud earrings and hoops in a size you are comfortable with for daily wear are good for every collection, but having more layering necklaces vs. earrings and bracelets, for example, is a matter of preference.
Personal style is expression at its purest form, and your jewelry capsule is no different.
The principal tip when creating your capsule jewelry collection
The key to any jewelry capsule is knowing how to style your pieces together and separately. First, understand who you are and what defines your personal style, then mix, match and stack based on the occasion.
For example, a bracelet stack can give an entirely different look than wearing one bracelet alone, and doesn’t require different lengths and sizes like layering necklaces does. Experiment and have fun with expressing yourself through your style to create new looks with each of the pieces in your capsule.
Ultimately, a capsule collection is supposed to make your life easier, not harder, so take your time building your capsule and give your style space to grow and evolve with time. Start with your essential pieces that you reach for everyday, then build from there. Experiment with different textures to add depth and variety to your style.
Remember you can never go wrong with the classics: a pair of studs, a pair of hoops and a gold chain necklace. They’re classics for a reason and the cornerstone of every capsule. Beyond that, building a capsule is more about self discovery than following a formula.
