HOW TO CLEAN GOLD JEWELRY AT HOME

HOW TO CLEAN GOLD JEWELRY AT HOME

The flip side to wearing jewelry everyday is that it can start to look grimy and dull, but with the proper tools and technique, you can restore your gold jewelry to its former shine. Read on for how to properly clean your gold jewelry at home without splurging on an expensive jewelry solution.

A simple solution for cleaning gold jewelry

Warm water, a few drops of dish soap and a couple of common household items are all it takes to clean your gold jewelry at home. This method can be used for both fine jewelry and high quality gold plated jewelry that is waterproof.

To get started, gather these materials:

Very mild dish soap

Warm water (make sure it isn’t hot!)

Glass bowl or similar receptacle

Soft toothbrush or cosmetic brush (optional)

Kitchen strainer such as colander or sieve

A step by step guide to cleaning gold jewelry at home

Even though you are using items that you have at home to clean your jewelry, following the proper technique is just as important. Once you have gathered your materials, follow these 5 steps:

Step 1: Pour lukewarm water into a bowl and mix with a couple of drops of dish soap.

Step 2: Soak your jewelry in the solution for a few minutes.

Step 3: If your jewelry still appears grimy use a very soft bristled brush to remove any embedded dirt and grime. Be gentle with the brush. The main reason for soaking the jewelry first is so the soap can soften the buildup.

Step 4: Rinse your jewelry by running it under lukewarm water. Do not let the water get too hot. Also, be sure to plug the sink before rinsing the jewelry so you don’t lose any small pieces. You may also place the jewelry in a kitchen strainer or sieve for extra safety.

Step 5: Pat the jewelry with a soft towelette and leave it to air dry on a clean towel.

After your jewelry dries, be sure to store it in its own dust bag to prevent any scratches or tarnishing. Keep all of your jewelry in separate dust bags, and then store them in a way that is most convenient for you. You might find that a large jewelry box with separate compartments works best, or another storage container that easily allows you to access your jewelry on a daily basis. As long as it works for you and keeps your jewelry safe, do what works best for you!

Remember: the experience you have wearing your jewelry depends on the quality of storage and care that you take, just as much as the quality of the jewelry itself.

If you take care of your jewelry and still find that it is tarnished or lacking the shine you are looking for, it’s time to consider investing in tarnish free jewelry. Whether you choose demi-fine or opt for fine jewelry, invest in gold jewelry that reflects your style and matches your shine. We recommend you give Gwen Beloti a try. We create jewelry that we believe in and happily offer a one-year warranty.
